I first heard "Der Lindenbaum (Am Brunnen vor dem Tore)" sung by the
The King's Singers on their LP
Die King's Singers singen deutsche Volkslieder. In Germany this song can generally be found as a standard and performed in mixed choirs. This song is one of my German favourites and if on the seldom occasions when asked to sing "something in German", then "Der Lindenbaum" gets a rare old belting from me (at least
I always enjoy it!). The version that I play and sing can be found in
Lieder, Songs und Gospels 1.
The tune was written by
Franz Schubert, famously adapted by
Friedrich Silcher and the words by Wilhelm Müller.
