I have never heard this ballad sung and came across in Soodlum's
100 Irish Ballads Volume 1. The song is of a forty-five year old spinster who is desperate to get married. She can't understand why she's still single despite her domestic proficiency. Her dread is ending up in a garret with a parrot.
Maids at eighteen is an English folk-song in a similar vein .
Recently (October, 2013), I found another amusing 5-verse variant under the title of
Don't Let Me Die an Old Maid given in
Marrow Bones.
