The Collier's Rant is a traditional
Geordie folk some antiquity (possibly c1650). It is said to be one of the oldest mining songs and was published by Joseph Ritson published it in his
Northumberland Garland (1793). The song also is given in Joseph Cawhall's
A Beuk o' Newcassel Sangs (1888), John Stokoe's
Songs and Ballads of Northern England (1893),
Rhymes of Northern Bards (1812) as well as
Bishoprick Garland (1834).This is a Geordieland favourite and tells of miners' struggles with the Devil in the depths of their love-and-hate workplaces.
This song may be found in the Tyneside Maritime Chorus songbook but not yet in my personal repertoire
