Ännchen von Tharau (by Simon Dach 1605-1659) and
Lorelei were the first poems which I learned by heart in the early 1960's out of
Teach Yourself More German. As a poem I found it very beautiful and have often quoted throughout the years. I first heard it as a song on a record called
Die King's Singer singen deutsche Volkslieder and found it to be exquisitely beautiful.
The version I sing can be seen in
Lieder, Songs und Gospels 3. The lyrics are by Heinrich Albert which are a little different from Simon Dach's poem and the melody is by
Friedrich Silcher.
It was always an enjoyment to accompany Britta Steenken on my concertina when performing with
Das Trio.
