"Suddenly afraid" is one of my absolute favourites. The lyrics and tune were given to me by
Brian Kelly as a scarcely legible photocopy, presumably from a Northern English chapbook, as he himself could do nothing with them.
The song has a very ancient feel about it. So far, I've not found any song expressing the sorrow of a mother losing her son, that is so mournful and so evocative of distress.
The photocopy notes that the words were adapted by A.L. Lloyd from a medieval carol and that the tune was also adapted by A.L. Lloyd - I would love to learn more.
