"Geordie" is yet another song to be found in
Songs and Dances of England
by Liz Thomson. It is a fine haunting English song on the iniquities of capital punishment in previous centuries. In this song our hero, Geordie, is sentenced to death by hanging for stealing sixteen deer. Even the entreaties of his sweetheart who offered the life of her two born children and the one in her body in return for Geordie's was not enough to prevail against "justice".
In July 2001, surfer Judy Forrest wrote that Norman Blake and Tony Rice do a lovely variant which can be heard on the CD given below. Thanks a lot, Judy!
