I have come to enjoy the
Geordie expressions whilst singing
Buy Broom Buzzems with the
Tyneside Maritime Chorus. According to
A Beuk o' Newcassel Sangs, Joseph Cawhall 1888,
Buy Broom Buzzems was composed by one by William Purvis. An early commercial for itinerant salespeople, the song extols the virtues of green products; observe the phrase in the chorus of
Fine heather bred 'uns, better never grew. The
Northumbrian Minstrelsy (1882) also includes this song and give an interesting page-lomg description of William [Blind Willie] Purvis (ca. 1752-1832)
The song is also given in
Songs and Ballads of Northern England (1893),
The Tyne Songster (1840),
Rhymes of Northern Bards (1812) and an arrangement my be found in
Singing Hinnies Book 1.
This song may be found in the Tyneside Maritime Chorus songbook
