The Sweet Kumadee is a fine jolly song that I was introduced to when I joined the
Tyneside Maritime Chorus in 2011. It tells the tale of a brave cabin boy on board the ship named in song's title and his derring-do in the sinking of a "French Gaudie" (presumably meaning a flashy French vessel). Not only did the lad have to sink the Frenchman, he also had to outwit his own treacherous captain before receiving his just rewards of the captain's eldest daughter and her dowry. A fine song indeed!
