Jake the Peg
Last updated: 11.10.23
I first saw/heard Jake the Peg, the tale of a lad blessed/afflicted with a fully functional extra leg, being performed way back in the 1960's by Rolf Harris on a BBC "Children's Hour" programme. Seeing Rolf's perambulatory efforts with three legs made a great impression on me and I never forgot it. On having to perform some item for an Anglo-German Club social evening back in the late 1970's, it seemed to be exactly the right number for me. Making up the third leg and rehearsing the number amused and entertained my then 8-year old son for some weeks leading up to its eventual performance a lá Geoff. Not only did I very much enjoy the performance itself in front of my club-mates but also hugely enjoyed walking past startled, nonplussed spectators and bystanders on the way to the venue on my own three legs.
The lyrics can be found in G'Day 20 All Time Favourite Aussie Songs.
