Something Doing is described as a cakewalk march as described on the original sheet music front cover. A cakewalk was a dance developed from an Afro-American contest in graceful walking dating from the plantation and slavery days - a cake being the prize. A pre-cursor to ragtime, the dance took on many versions even to the extent of being adapted by high society in Paris.
