Scott Hayden was born in Sedalia, Missouri and became a friend and protege of Scott Joplin and they lived together for a while somewhere around 1901. Contemporary sources maintain that he was a capable ragtime player. Joplin also at that time courted Hayden's widowed sister-in-law, Belle who he later married. After his early promise, Hayden spent the last 12 years of his life as a lift operator in Chicago at the Cook County Hospital where he died of tuberculosis.
Scott Hayden is remembered chiefly as a collaborator with Joplin in the following compositions: Sunflower Slow Drag (1901), Something Doing (1903), Felicity Rag (1911) and Kismet Rag (1913).
