Solace is perhaps Joplin's most beautiful composition, a tango of tremendous emotional depth, warmth and passion. Peter Gammond in his book Scott Joplin and the Ragtime Era waxes lyrical on this extraordinary piece devoting almost a complete page to it. Its form is a Joplin classic comprising a 4-bar introduction followed by AABBACCDD languorous strains three of which use a slow habanera rhythm. It was Joplin's only tango, a piece quite unlike anything he or anybody else had ever written before.
