Gabriel Fauré  (1845-1924)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Gabriel Fauré was a French composer (also organist); director of the Paris Conservatory, 1905-20, teacher of Ravel and others. Cultivated delicately-balanced idiom expressed mainly in small forms - wrote many piano solos, "Dolly" for piano duet, many songs, including song-cycle, "La Bonne Chanson", and other song cycles; also two piano quartets, and other chamber music. Also wrote Requiem; orchestral works including "Pavane" (With optional chorus); Ballad for piano and orchestra (originally for piano alone);incidental music to "Pelleas and Melisande", and other music for the French and English stage.
