Tom Costello  (1863-1943)
Last updated: 04.10.24
p_costellot.jpgAccording to the Internet source given below, Tom Costello [Thomas Costellow] was a British music hall comedian and singer who may have been born in Birmingham or Ireland.
He was an engraver before making his first stage appearance in Wolverhampton in 1883 and before performing in music halls in Bedford and south London in the same year. An early successe was his performance of My Nellie's Blue Eyes (1886 ) by William James Scanlan which was then parodied by Charles Coborn with his Two Lovely Black Eyes (1886).
Costello specialised in black humour, such as At Trinity Church I Met My Doom(1894) by Fred Gilbert and sentimental/patriotic ballads such as Comrades (1890) by Felix McGlennon which became his signature song. Both those songs are given in 60 Old-Time Variety Songs
He toured with his own variety company in the 1920's and recorded a medley of his most famous songs in 1933.
He died in London.
