It is surprising that so little has been written about singer, composer and music hall performer, George Bastow considering his output of sheet music and recordings. Much of the sheet music pictures him as a smock-dressed rustic as shown on the left, which was taken from the cover of Varmer Giles (1902 - music: Gilbert Wells; words: T.F. Robson) and published by Francis, Day & Hunter, London W.C.2, England. His most enduring work has to be The Galloping Major (1906) which he sang but never recorded although it was and still is covered by many others. Fred W. Leigh wrote the words and also published by Francis, Day and Hunter.
