Stoptime Rag is clearly intended to be a fun piece - Joplin starts us off with fast or slow, f or p and that foot-stamping twice a bar throughout the piece is mandatory to get the "desired effect". With so much stamping going on, the rag has all the character of a folk dance. This recorder adaptation presents this task to the descant player who otherwise does not have too much to do, especially in the final two sections. I am sure the fun can be even further advanced if some of the other voices could find time to join in. Joplin first experimented with "Stoptime" in his The Ragtime Dance (1906) (DBE053). The piece is finished off with a firm fine indicating that further repeats are not intended. A tempo of 100 crotchets/min. is suggested to readily accommodate the stamping.
