The sub-title, A High Class Rag, further demonstrates Joplin's obsession with "classiness" first mentioned in his School of Ragtime (1908). This recorder adaptation is extremely demanding on the descant player whereby a few top D's and even an E (bar 59) are on the menu. The top three voices also have their work cut-out in the heavily chorded concluding trio requiring very concise playing. A very enjoyable piece!
Whilst Joplin suggests a slow march tempo of an unseemly 100 crotchets/min., taking it easy at 72 crotchets/min. seems about right.
