J. Russel Robinson (1892-1963)

Overview

According to the Internet source given below, J. Russel Robinson was an American ragtime and jazz pianist as well as being composer of popular music. He was born Indianapolis, Indiana and achieved early success whilst still a teenager with his Sapho Rag (1909) and That Eccentric Rag (1912). He toured the South with his brother, a drummer, in the early teens eventually earning the sobriquet, "The White Boy with the Colored Fingers". In 1919 he became a member of the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and later worked as an arranger for William C. Handy's music publishing company. He recorded as an accompanist with several singers such as Annette Hanshaw, Lucille Hegamin, Marion Harris, and Lizzie Miles. Robinson died in Palmdale, California.
