Twelfth Street Rag is considered by some to be relatively simple due to its secondary rag three over four pattern making it easy to play and easy to improvise on. In fact its first publication was held to be almost impossible to play, particularly the introduction, and was rearranged for the Jenkins Publishing firm in order to make it the evergreen it has become. Bowman sold Twelfth Street Rag together with some other of his compositions for a paltry $300 and it was not until 1942 that was able retrieve his copyright.
This recorder adaptation is a fun piece and should be taken light-heartedly. The adaptation faithfully reproduces the original sheet music in that it is completely devoid of any kind of ornamentation, dynamics, tempo instructions or musical terms. Its composition form defies a simple explanation. Improvisation is clearly intended!
A tempo of 180 crotchets/min. is suggested.
