Thomas Morley (1557-1603)

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Thomas Morley was an English composer, pupil of William Byrd; organist at St Paul's Cathedral, London, and member of the Chapel Royal. Writer of textbook, "A Plain and Easy Introduction to Practical Music". His setting of "It was a lover and his lass" from Shakespeare's "As you like it" may have been for the original production of the play (1599). He also wrote Latin and English church music, madrigals, ballets (he introduced this form in England), canzonets for two and more voices, solo songs with lute, pieces for viols and for keyboard. Editor of and contributor to "The Triumphs of Oriana".
