p_whittlecr.jpgAccording to the Internet source given below,Charles Richard Whittle was an English music hall singer born in Manningham, Bradford.
Initially he worked in an ironworks before having a successful stage career in Yorkshire and then moving to London. Probably his most successful song was Let's All Go Down the Strand (1908) by Harry Castling and C.W. Murphy which is given in 60 Old-Time Variety Songs. His portrait given on the left is taken from the front cover of I Want You to See My Girl (1907) also by Castling.
Historian W. J. MacQueen-Pope said of him:
Whittle was the sort of man everyone knew, the real sort of man to be a star of that entertainment which was for the people, of the people and by the people. His mastery of an audience was complete; all felt he was their friend, all knew him the moment he walked on. He knew all about singing songs, he had some of the best to sing and he sang them quietly but with all the proper emphasis.
He died Bradford..
