The Black Cat Rag was respectfully dedicated to Miss Bessie Wood Stewart. It is a fine, straightforward rag in AABBCCAA form with a 4-bar introduction whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in the major keys of F and Bb respectively. Wooster later sold this rag to the prestigious John Stark, Scott Joplin's publisher also of St Louis. It was widely known and still performed and recorded even today. In this transcription for recorder sextet, the melodies are shared by the upper voices whereby the 1st tenor plays a prominent part especially in the B-strain.
The Black Cat Rag was published by Frank Wooster Co., St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 150 crotchets/min. is suggested.
