Length: approx. 5 mins.
The Brownie Rag, as can be seen on the cover of the original sheet music, appears to celebrate a cheerful, cigar-smoking vagabond who is sought variously by a policeman, a Chinese and a sailor. The rag itself, characterised by crashing chords, is in AABBCCDDAABB form with a jarring 6-bar introduction which doubles as an interlude preceding the final AA-strains. In this transcription for recorder sextet, all voices have a say with ample opportunity to display their individual virtuosities. A splendid ensemble piece!
The Brownie Rag was published by Frank Wooster Co., St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. crotchets/min. is suggested.
