New Era Rag, an optimistically entitled composition proclaiming the end of the then believed war to end wars. It is of AABBACCB form; not an easy piece in this recorder adaptation with its exploration of the upper registers. Of note I especially enjoy the dialogue between the upper and medium voices in the A-strain and most particularly as a bass player, the lovely bass runs in the more jazzy sounding C-strain. The cover of the original sheet music depicts an elegant scene of dancers enjoying themselves at a tea (presumably) dance in a chandeliered palm court. The motto over the heads of the dancers of "Honi soit qui mal-y-pense" ("Evil to him that thinks evil") provides a classy effect even if a little out-of-place. Incidentally the publisher John Stark also used this cover for two further Scott pieces:
Tango Tea and
The Shimmie Shake.
