When James Scott sub-titled
Quality as
A High Class Rag, he certainly was not exaggerating.
Quality is an absolutely delightful and exhilarating rag which delights players and audiences alike. Recorder players are really put on their mettle in this adaptation. Not only do they have to cope with A-flat and D-flat major keys but also with swift high-register passages demanding precise tonguing and careful attention to the other voices. Its form (intro. ABAC intro D.) is more-or-less ragtime classic contrasting somewhat with
Scott Joplin's compositions.
Quality was published by
Stark Music Co, St. Louis, Missouri, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
This recorder adaptation is respectfully dedicated to Christian Blümel, a quality brass musician and music educator now of Münster, Germany.
