A "classic" rag,
Knockout Drops has an AABBACCDD form with a 4-bar introduction and a 4-bar interlude between the A- and CC-strains whereby the ABBA- and CCDD strains are written in the major keys of C and F respectively. Much recorded, this is the title piece of the present day Paragon Ragtime Orchestra. A particular knock-out in this adaptation for recorder quintet, is that the great bass player has the most unusual honour and distinction of being required to alternate to sopranino for a half-bar glissando before making an extremely nifty reversal to his or her instrument. To add to the general difficulty, the glissando has to be taken up seamlessly by the treble player and the effect has to be achieved for the listener, that only one voice is heard. Apart from this, so easy on a piano but so difficult with recorders,
Knockout Drops is a most enjoyable jolly romp.

Scored Tempo di Rag, a tempo of 80 seems about right.
