The cover of the original sheet music of High Yellow shows a pair of elegant "high yellow" dancers high-strutting their cake walk, high yellow being of course the nowadays offensive term for light-skinned people of mixed racial parentage.
The cakewalk itself, which actually is a rag, however causes no offence and has an AABBACC form with a 4-bar introduction and two 4- and 12- bar interludes separating the AC- and CC-strains successively. In this adaptation for recorder quintet, the 1st bass is called on to do a pretty nifty alternation to tenor in a few places requiring a high level of skill. If a few bars of "umpah" are missed however, this represents to great loss. It is just another indication of this editor's intention that no note, however unimportant, gets lost!
High Yellow was published by Frank K. Root and Co., Chicago, Illinois, USA.
Scored Tempo di Cake Walk, a tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
