The cover of the original sheet music of
High Yellow shows a pair of elegant "high yellow" dancers high-strutting their cake walk, high yellow being of course the nowadays offensive term for light-skinned people of mixed racial parentage.
The cakewalk itself, which actually is a rag, however causes no offence and has an AABBACC form with a 4-bar introduction and two 4- and 12- bar interludes separating the AC- and CC-strains successively. In this adaptation for recorder quintet, the 1st bass is called on to do a pretty nifty alternation to tenor in a few places requiring a high level of skill. If a few bars of "umpah" are missed however, this represents to great loss. It is just another indication of this editor's intention that no note, however unimportant, gets lost!
