Dill Pickles was Johnson's greatest rag hit and was reportedly to have been the first ragtime piece to sell over one million copies. This recorder adaptation really brings out the syncopation whereby the 2nd tenors who one a brief glance do not appear to have too much to do have to play very precisely with the 1st tenor in order to achieve the composer's intended ragtime effect.
For those who really want to know a dill pickle is a pickled cucumber i.e. flavoured with dill ( an unbelliferous herb, Anethum graveolens, with yellow flowers and aromatic seeds). Why in the original sheet music a dill pickle should be depicted as an early dirigible is lost in ragtime history.
