Daniels wrote The Classic
using the pseudonym
Neil Moret. Whilst the front cover of the original sheet music shows a classic Greek Doric temple housing a classic Greek miss, the rag itself is not of a classic form à la Scott Joplin
, Joseph F. Lamb
and James Sylvester Scott
. Nonetheless it is a fine and interesting rag with an unusual form of AABCBDDAB with an 8-bar introduction. The ABC- and D-strains are written in the major keys of G and C respectively. It is heavily ornamented with much dotting demanding meticulous tonguing from the interpreters. Bars 41-42, which have apparently been omitted in the piano score, have been reconstructed by the editor based on iterations of the same theme in other parts of the score.
