The Buffalo Rag is an easy going jog along piece of fun. The melody is shared by the first two voices and occasionally flows between them whilst the rhythm section "thumps" away with plenty of "chordy" passages demanding very accurate tonguing. The original was published for band, orchestra, mandolins and guitars, there were therefore no qualms in selecting this piece for recorder adaptation. It would be intriguing to know how
The Buffalo Rag got its title as there appears to be nothing in the music that is buffalo like. Was it named after Buffalo City, NY or the beast itself? The answer to this conundrum lies lost almost 100 years back in the beginnings of ragtime history.
The Buffalo Rag was published by
Will Rossiter, Chicago, Illinois, USA.
A tempo of 90 crotchets/min. is suggested.
