Length: ranges from approx. 3½ mins to infinity depending on performer fitness and audience mood.
Perpetuum Mobile was Strauss's superlative party-piece and refined "joke" which he performed together with his brothers Josef and Eduard in the 1860's each conducting their own orchestras. It has been taken up in many genres including a wonderful vocal arrangement performed by the The Comedian Harmonists in the 1930's. Having such illustrious predecessors, the editor has no compunction in making this adaptation for the recorder which is an ensemble piece par excellence. The treble voice has to display both endurance and virtuosity from start to finish - whenever that is! The bass player need no end of puff and should no doubt develop enlarged lungs if he or she practice enough whilst the tenors have to hang in there with lots of bar-counting set off against swift tongued flourishes. The parts have been laid out to ease this task. The whole work is heavily dotted, accentuated, ornamented and slurred to which careful regard should be given. Perpetuum Mobile must be the ultimate encore!
A tempo of 120 crotchets/min. is suggested.
There is also a sextet version of this item.
