Pickles and Peppers is certainly an oddity amongst the rags of its day. Quirky, hot and as ragged as it gets, it is in this adaptation for recorder quintet really a quite a demanding composition. Its form is AABBCDDD with a 4-bar introduction and 8- and 16-bar interludes between the CD- and final DD-strains respectively. The whole is written in the recorder players' favourite key of Ab. The 1st voice has a lot of fun alternating between treble and descant whilst the basses have a field-day in the interludes.
Unremarkably perhaps, the cover of the original sheet music shows, yes indeedy, pickles and peppers both in red and green varieties in harmony with this tasteful rag.
Pickles and Peppers was published by Joseph Flanner, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA.
A tempo of 80 crotchets/min. is suggested.
