The imaginative cover of the original sheet music of
Ragtime "Betty" is the work Clair Victor Dwiggins who also did the jolly cover of Scott's
Ophelia Rag (1910). A very well-shaped young miss with huge hair-do is shown sitting daintily on a treble stave for a seat and using a mushroom as a footstool singing her head off from a giant sheet of music in an exemplary posture that music teachers everywhere delight in. Over her shoulders, she is joined by a heavenly chorus comprising the moon and stars with admirably wide opened mouths.
The rag itself is a bright, cheerful, somewhat complex composition in AABBACCDD form with plenty of dialogue between the voices and some nice bass runs. In this recorder adaptation, the descant has much bar-counting to do but is rewarded in the final D-strain with some soaring passages.
