The
Don't Jazz Me-Rag, subtitled
I'm Music, is a defiant
cri de coeur by a composer who sticks, to use words more appropriate to the cobbling trade, to his last. As mentioned above, at a time when the decline of ragtime and the ascent of jazz was in full swing, Scott continued to write "classic" rags in full conviction right up to the end of his career. The rag itself is most definitely music indeed; a lively piece in AABBACCBB form. For my taste Scott's almost standard rejoinder of Not too fast should be meticulously respected as indeed the Slower scored for the final BB strains.
