The cover of the original sheet music to Climax Rag depicts a fairly heavy sea breaking over some extremely unlikely and very pointed rocks. What that has to do with the music requires, perhaps, some imagination although the first section certainly has "breaking" points. This is not an easy piece for recorder players, not only are they keys of Ab-major and Db-major used but the 1st voice often has to play right at the top. For all that it is a terrific piece, all voices have plenty to do and it is well worth the effort required to perform this minor gem competently in accordance with the composers intentions.
