This "Sonata and Allegro" by G.F. Handel was amongst the first purchases that I made whilst still a young Petty Officer on H.M.S. Victorious in January 1965. According to Fritz Spiegel's notes both these pieces are based on a manuscript in the Royal Music Library entitled
Ten Tunes for Clay's Musical Clock and
Sonata for a musical clock. Further pieces from these works are given in
Four Pieces For a Musical Clock
These are simple pieces well within the range of a beginner and are good practise for developing skills with "runs" and "leaps". The Sonata is one of the few recorder pieces that I learned by heart.
By the way, the name Fritz Spiegel became well-known to me a few years later as he was the composer of the theme tune for a popular TV police "soap", "Softly, Softly".
