This Suite in G Major was amongst the first purchases that I made whilst still a young Petty Officer on H.M.S. Victorious inApril 1965. It has 4 movements namely: Prélude, La Christine, Sarabande and La Tubeuf. This work is quite beyond the reach of the beginner. Every few years or so, I blow the dust off its fading, yellowing once-grey cover and try again - but to no avail. This piece is really for advanced players with genuine skills. It has everything in it terms of runs and ornamentation.
I also have in my possession and extended play record, "Play it yourself No. 4" (HMV 7EG 8858) which has "La Tubeuf" on it. This record series allows you to listen to the master, in this case
Carl Dolmetsch himself, and then play it yourself accompanied by an international accompanist and in this case none less than Joseph Saxeby. After hearing Carl Dolmetsch playing "La Tubeuf" I was completely demoralised.
