When transcribing the two cakewalks Smoky Sam (1898) and Walkin' on de Rainbow Road (1899) , both published by M.D. Swisher, Philadelphia, for recorder ensemble back in 2006, I took the publisher's blurb at its face value. On the front cover of the latter, the publisher proclaims S. M. Roberts to be "the man that perpetrated Smoky Sam and a few other feet wrigglers.". As a result I believed S. M. Roberts to be yet another obscure ragtime era composer of whom nothing was known.
While researching Stults in March, 2015, however, I found that he used S. M. Roberts as a pseudonym for his three ragtime compositions the third piece being A Moonlight Meander (1900).
