Madge Ellis (1875-)
Last updated: 17.03.25
p_ellism.jpgAll that can presently (September 2022) be gleaned about Madge Ellis from sheet music covers and by Internet searching is that she was presumably an English music hall performer who has been featured on 5 works published between 1895 and 1898.
Her portrait on the left is taken from the Ogden's Guinea Gold Cigarettes bromide cigarette card No. 734, published circa 1894-1907.
Surfers are welcome to contribute any further information about this performer.
Since writing the above, surfer Samuel L. Leiter sent me an interesting press cutting in January 2025 (see tab above) which reflects on the good lady's character.
Many thanks Mr. Leiter!

Samuel L. Leiter wrote the following:
I'm writing a book about the last four months of theatre in Brooklyn in 1897, before it gave up its independence to become part of Greater New York. I include burlesque and vaudeville shows at each of the city's four non-legit houses.
But in a review of a French farce (by Georges Feydeau), Madge Ellis is referenced with Lottie Gilson to imply that these performers were somehow improperly risque. Lottie Gilson was indeed partly known for her bawdy songs, as you probably know, but I couldn't find anything to confirm this about Ellis. The point is that she was obviously herself somehow blue in her material, enough so to be cited for it as an example of what to avoid. A minor note but maybe you'll find it of interest.
