Johnson Rag became hit in 1950 when it was recorded by the Russ Morgan Orchestra some 33 years after its composition. It has a quasi rondo form of AABACCA and is written in the recorder layers favourite key of Ab-major. The A-strain is absolutely hypnotic and if one does not take care an involuntary repeat may result. Not an easy piece as a transcription for recorder sextet, especially the B-strain which abounds in chords of sixteenths which demand precise tonguing.
Johnson Rag is well worth mastering.
