Indianola was also published as a same named song "with clever words" by Frank H. Warren. Its form is AABBCC with a 2-bar introduction and a 12-bar interlude separating the CC- strains whereby the AB- and C-strains are written in the major keys of Bb and Eb respectively.
Indianola is clearly intended to be danced to as indicated by the note for dancing schools included in the original piano score and faithfully reproduced here in this adaptation for recorder sextet. These composition cleverly combines the sombre tones evocative of dancing around night fires surrounded by wigwams with the elegance of fox-trotting in an candle-lit ballroom.
