According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Jean Françaix was a French composer (also pianist), pupil of N. Boulanger and others; had a piano suite published at 9. Works cultivating clarity (and often brevity) of style, and influenced by Igor Stravinsky, include piano concertino (1934) and concerto (1936); symphony for strings; "Beach"; and other music for ballet; Serenade for 12 instruments, chamber music; operas.
