Clemens non Papa (1510-1558)

Overview

According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Clemens non Papa is the nickname given to Jacob Clement who was a Flemish composer of Latin church music, psalms in Flemish, songs, etc. The nickname, formerly thought to mean "Clement not the Pope", i.e. Clement VIII, was probably designed to avoid confusion with a Flemish poet, Clemens Papa, of the composer's home town of Ypres.
