According to the Internet source given below, Burl Icle Ivanhoe Ives (June 14, 1909 was an American singer and actor of stage, screen, radio and television born in Hunt City, an unincorporated town in Jasper County, Illinois, near Newton.
His career started as an itinerant singer and banjoist later launching his own radio show The Wayfaring Stranger,. In 1942 he appeared in Irving Berlin's This Is the Army and then starred of CBS radio. He became a country music artist in the 1960's, recording hits such as A Little Bitty Tear and Funny Way of Laughin.
As an actor he is remembered for parts in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Big Country (1958) winning an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.
