Will O' the Wisp seems to celebrate those mischievous spirits that were said to lead travellers from the well-trodden paths into treacherous marshes. Except for the syncopation there is nothing particularly treacherous about this piece. It has an AABBCCAA form with an 8-bar interlude between the CC- and AA-strains, the whole being written in the key of G-major. Here one should pay particular attention to the publisher's modest blurb and their full instructions:

NOTICE: we were first to publish this kind of music. Our Syncopated Waltzes are strictly original, we have them in several different styles of syncopation.
IMPORTANT: When playing our Syncopated Waltzes, be very careful not to separate the tied notes, see that proper accent is given (to the( last eighth note in each measure where it is tied to the first note in the next measure. Do not play too fast. If you are familiar with our ever popular "Floreine" Syncopated Waltz you should play this excellent number easily. The Publishers.

A tempo of 150 crotchets/min. is suggested.
Will O' the Wisp was published by Warner C. Williams & Co., Indianapolis, Indiana, USA.
