According to The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Thomas Whythorne [Whithorne] was an English composer who travelled in Italy and elsewhere, and wrote music for voices, for viols, etc., including some duos expressly with option for voices or for instruments. His autobiography, written in phonetic script, was rediscovered in 1955.
