The New Penguin Dictionary of Music, Sergey [Sergeyevich] Prokofiev was a Russian composer; also pianist. Pupil of
Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov and others. Lived abroad from 1918 until settling again in Russia in 1934; his style became more straightforward and "popular" e.g. "Peter and the Wolf. None the less, some of his later works were officially condemned for "Formalism" in 1948, along with works by other leading Soviet composers and his last opera "The Story of a Real Man" was publicly produced only after his death. in 1960. He composed symphonies, piano, violin and cello concertos as well as ballets; songs, patriotic cantatas, piano sonatas, violin sonatas and other instrumental works; film music.
