According to Bernard Thomas's notes, surprisingly little is known about Valentin Haussmann: even his birthdate is quite unknown. It is recorded that he composed a lament for the death of one of the officials of the South German town of Ulm in 1592, and his first compositions to appear in print were published in Regensburg (Bavaria) in about 1594. Although he is known to have travelled a bit like most musicians of his day (he is known to have visited Poland, for instance), he must have spent a good deal of his time in the south of Germany, as the most of his works were published in Nürnberg.
The precise date of his death is not known, but it must have been in or shortly before 1614, as the second volume of Jeep's Studentengärtlein, which appeared in that year, contains a lament for his death. Haussmann seems to have been a prolific composer, publishing many collections of sacred works, as well as several volumes of simpler secular pieces.
