The new effect was that Britain nor America could build new Battleships, Japan could only build nine capital ships by 1935, while France and Italy could in theory build any number within a 35,000 ton displacement limit.

This is a handsomely-produced reprint of the 1939 edition of the well-known naval annual. It is an interesting volume for collectors and naval enthusiasts, though difficult to obtain these days. (I recall finding an original edition in a library over 30 years ago -- those are probably unobtainable at any price!) One usually does not "read" what is, in form, a reference book. This book, however, should be read -- and read with care. The information in this book is often erroneous. It was prepared on the eve of the Second World War, from the best publicly-available data concerning the warships of the world. As such, it reflects the statistics and information that the world's navies wanted foreign powers to believe, rather than the factual reality of ship designs. Thus, much of the information concerning the Imperial Japanese Navy is incorrect, whereas data on American warships is more accurate. Paradoxically, the "errors" -- the differences between the published data and the actual designs of the ships -- render this book interesting. It is nevertheless important that potential purchasers understand what the '39 Edition of Jane's is and what it is not. It is a portrait of a world on the brink of disaster, asea in roiling misinformation. It is not a true reference book.

If used properly this can be a great source for any one wanting naval information. New copies are very expensive, but used ones can come cheap for those of us like me who want good reference books but cannot afford $700 a pop.

Insgesamt ist dieses Buch die wohl umfassenste Darstellung über die Schiffe und Männer der Kriegsflotten der Erde. Dabei wird in bewährter Manier keine Seestreitmacht ausgelassen und sei sie noch so klein, am Rande dieser Welt oder unbedeutend. Man erhält sogar Informationen über die "See"streitkräfte Österreichs. Der große Nachteil dieses Buches ist sein unwahrscheinlich hoher Preis von fast achthundert Mark, den man sich als interessierter Laie wohl kaum leisten wird. Als nur wenig schlechtere Alternative (aber viel billiger) kann man das Buch "Weyers Flottentaschenbuch. Warships of the World" empfehlen. "Jane's Fighting Ships 2000-2001," edited by Richard Sharpe, is a truly monumental reference work. At about 1,000 richly illustrated pages long, this is one solid book. The bulk of the book consists of alphabetical entries on nations (from Angola to Yugoslavia) with warships and other national waterborne vessels. The book also contains a color chart of the flags displayed on the ships of each nation, and charts showing the ranks and insignia of each nation's navy, coast guard, and/or maritime police force. For each nation, the book gives information on the navy and other watergoing forces (key leadership, number of personnel, etc). The book covers the various types of vessels employed in each force, giving a wealth of data on each class of vessel: crew complement, weapons systems, dimensions, etc. There are many full-color photos and labeled drawings. You'll find detailed data on all types of ships: icebreakers, tugs, small patrol craft, aircraft carriers, destroyers, survey ships, minesweepers, underway replenishment tankers, strategic missile submarines, barracks ships, amphibious assault ships, floating drydocks, salvage ships, hospital ships, and much, much, more. The book even includes the patrol boats used by the Swiss Navy on the lakes of that landlocked nation. There is also information on shipboard aircraft. Along the way are many fascinating facts about the history and capabilities of various ships. "JFS 00-01" is a truly remarkable, visually stunning compilation of naval information.
