Last updated: 26.04.20
According to The Oxford Companion to Music, Turlough O'Carolan was born at Newtown, County Meath, Ireland and died at Alderford, Leitrim aged sixty-eight. He was bard, always to have been held in particular honour in Ireland, blind and travelled the country on horse-back, with an attendant; he showed remarkable facility in the improvisation of both poetry and music. Turlough O'Carolan was also both a harper and the composer of many melodies still famous.
